Essential Unit Conversions for Pharmacy Math
Review the metric, apothecary, and household measurement conversions tested on the PTCB exam.
Metric System Conversions
The metric system is the standard for pharmacy. Key conversions include: 1 kg = 1000 g, 1 g = 1000 mg, 1 mg = 1000 mcg, 1 L = 1000 mL. Moving between units means moving the decimal point three places.
Common volume conversions: 1 teaspoon (tsp) = 5 mL, 1 tablespoon (tbsp) = 15 mL, 1 fluid ounce = 30 mL, 1 cup = 240 mL, 1 pint = 473 mL, 1 gallon = 3785 mL.
Weight Conversions
For weight: 1 kg = 2.2 lbs, 1 oz = 28.35 g, 1 lb = 454 g, 1 grain = 65 mg. The pound-to-kilogram conversion is particularly important for weight-based dosing calculations.
Temperature conversions are occasionally tested: F = (C x 9/5) + 32 and C = (F - 32) x 5/9. Normal body temperature is 98.6 F or 37 C.
