Telepharmacy and Remote Dispensing Technology

Learn about telepharmacy operations and remote verification for the PTCB exam.

What Is Telepharmacy?

Telepharmacy uses telecommunications technology to provide pharmacy services in locations where a pharmacist is not physically present. A remote pharmacist supervises dispensing via video conference, verifying prescriptions and counseling patients electronically. This model expands access to pharmacy care in rural and underserved areas.

Telepharmacy regulations vary by state. Some states allow remote dispensing sites staffed by certified pharmacy technicians under the supervision of a pharmacist at a remote location. Others have more restrictive requirements.

Remote Verification

Remote product verification allows pharmacists to verify prescriptions filled at one location from another site. High-resolution cameras capture images of the filled prescription, label, and original prescription for the pharmacist to review remotely.

This technology enables after-hours verification, supports staffing flexibility, and can improve workflow efficiency in chain pharmacy operations. However, it requires robust technology infrastructure and clear standard operating procedures.
