Statin Medications: What Pharmacy Techs Need to Know
A pharmacy tech guide to statin medications including brand names, side effects, and monitoring requirements for the PTCB exam.
Understanding Statins
Statins are HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors that lower LDL cholesterol. They are among the most prescribed medications in the United States. The PTCB exam expects you to know common statins by both generic and brand names.
Key statins include atorvastatin (Lipitor), rosuvastatin (Crestor), simvastatin (Zocor), and pravastatin (Pravachol). The "-statin" suffix makes these easy to identify.
Side Effects and Monitoring
The most important side effect is myopathy, which can range from mild muscle pain to severe rhabdomyolysis. Patients should report unexplained muscle pain immediately. Liver function tests are also monitored, especially at the start of therapy.
Simvastatin has notable drug interactions with grapefruit juice and certain medications like amiodarone due to CYP3A4 metabolism. Atorvastatin is often taken at bedtime because cholesterol synthesis peaks at night.
