Smart Pump Technology in Hospital Pharmacy
Learn about smart IV pump technology and its safety features for the PTCB exam.
How Smart Pumps Work
Smart infusion pumps are programmable IV pumps with built-in drug libraries and dose error reduction systems (DERS). When a nurse programs a medication infusion, the pump checks the programmed rate and concentration against pre-set limits in its drug library. If the programmed values fall outside safe ranges, the pump alerts the user.
Hard limits are maximum and minimum values that cannot be overridden, preventing potentially fatal overdoses. Soft limits trigger a warning that the nurse can override with documentation of clinical justification.
Pharmacy Technician Involvement
Pharmacy technicians may be involved in maintaining smart pump drug libraries, which must be updated as new medications are added or dosing guidelines change. Accurate drug library maintenance is critical for the safety system to function properly.
Smart pump data can be analyzed to identify near-miss events, common programming errors, and opportunities for process improvement. This data supports medication safety initiatives and helps reduce preventable adverse drug events.
