Receiving and Verifying Drug Shipments
Learn the proper procedures for receiving, verifying, and storing pharmacy shipments for the PTCB exam.
Receiving Procedures
When a drug shipment arrives, pharmacy technicians follow a structured receiving process. First, verify the delivery against the purchase order and packing slip. Check the number of totes or boxes received matches what was shipped. Open containers and verify each item against the invoice, checking product name, NDC number, strength, quantity, and lot number.
Refrigerated and frozen items must be checked and stored immediately upon arrival to maintain the cold chain. Check temperature monitors included with cold-chain shipments to verify products were maintained within the required temperature range during transit.
Controlled Substance Receiving
Controlled substances require additional verification. Schedule II deliveries must be checked against the DEA Form 222 or CSOS order. The receiving pharmacist must sign and date the receipt. Any discrepancies must be reported immediately to both the supplier and, if theft is suspected, to the DEA.
All receiving documentation should be filed and retained according to state and federal record-keeping requirements, typically for at least two years.
