PTCE Exam Day: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Feeling nervous about exam day? Walk through the entire PTCE testing experience from check-in to results, so you arrive at Pearson VUE with total confidence.

Before You Arrive

Your PTCE is administered at a Pearson VUE testing center. You should receive a confirmation email with your appointment details, including the center address and check-in time. Arrive at least 30 minutes early. Bring two forms of valid identification, with your primary ID being a government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport) that matches the name on your PTCB application exactly.

What to Bring and What to Leave Behind

Bring your two IDs and your confirmation number. Leave everything else in your car or at home. You cannot bring phones, watches, wallets, food, water, notes, or any study materials into the testing room. The center provides a locker for your belongings.

The Check-In Process

At the center, staff will verify your identity, take your photograph, and may scan your fingerprints or palm veins. You will sign a testing agreement and receive instructions. A test center administrator will escort you to your assigned computer workstation.

During the Exam

You have 1 hour and 50 minutes for 90 multiple-choice questions. An on-screen calculator is provided. You can mark questions for review and navigate freely between questions. The 10 unscored pretest questions are mixed in randomly; you will not know which ones they are, so treat every question as scored.

Taking a Break

You can take an unscheduled break, but the clock does not stop. Raise your hand and the administrator will escort you out and back in. Minimize breaks to preserve your testing time.

After You Finish

When you submit your exam, you will see a preliminary pass/fail result on the screen. This is not official but is almost always accurate. Official results appear in your PTCB account within 1-3 weeks, along with a score report showing your performance in each domain.

If You Do Not Pass

You can retake the PTCE after a waiting period. Use your score report to identify weak areas and adjust your study plan. Many successful technicians passed on their second attempt with more focused preparation.

The best way to walk into exam day with confidence is consistent preparation using full-length PTCB practice exams.
