PTCE Answer Elimination: Beat Multiple Choice Questions
Master the process of elimination for PTCE multiple choice questions. Learn to identify distractors, spot absolutes, and narrow your choices for a higher score.
Why Elimination Works on the PTCE
Every PTCE question has four answer choices. Even when you are unsure of the correct answer, you can often eliminate one or two wrong options, dramatically improving your odds. Elimination is not guessing; it is a strategic approach that leverages partial knowledge to maximize your score.
Step 1: Read the Question Carefully
Before looking at the answer choices, make sure you understand what the question is asking. Pay attention to keywords like "EXCEPT," "NOT," "MOST," and "BEST." These qualifiers change the entire meaning of the question. Misreading a question is one of the most common reasons for wrong answers.
Step 2: Identify Obvious Distractors
Distractors are wrong answers designed to look plausible. Common distractor patterns include:
- An answer that would be correct for a different drug or condition
- A number that is close to the correct calculation but uses the wrong formula
- A procedure that sounds reasonable but violates federal or state law
- An option that includes a real pharmacy term used in the wrong context
Step 3: Watch for Absolutes
Answer choices containing words like "always," "never," "all," or "none" are often incorrect. Pharmacy practice is full of exceptions. An answer that says a technician "must always" do something is more likely wrong than one that says "typically" or "in most cases."
Step 4: Use What You Know
If you recognize one detail in the question, use it. For example, if a question asks about a Schedule II medication and you know C-II drugs cannot be refilled, any answer mentioning refills can be eliminated immediately.
Step 5: Compare Remaining Options
When you have narrowed it to two choices, look for the key difference between them. Often, one will be more specific or more aligned with the question's focus. Choose the answer that most directly addresses what was asked.
Practice Makes Perfect
The best way to develop elimination skills is to practice with realistic questions. Work through PTCB mini exams and for every question, practice eliminating at least one option before selecting your answer.
