What to Expect on PTCB Exam Day
The day of your PTCB certification exam can feel overwhelming if you do not know what to expect. This guide walks you through the entire experience at Pearson VUE testing centers, from arrival to results, so you can focus on doing your best.
Before You Arrive
- Confirm your appointment: Log into your Pearson VUE account and verify the date, time, and location of your exam
- Plan your route: Know exactly how to get to the testing center and allow extra time for traffic or weather
- Get a good night's sleep: Avoid cramming the night before. Your brain consolidates learning during sleep.
- Eat a healthy meal: Have a balanced breakfast or meal before your exam. Avoid excessive caffeine.
- Bring valid identification: You need two forms of ID, at least one with a photo and signature. A government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport) plus a credit card with your signature is the most common combination.
At the Testing Center
Plan to arrive 30 minutes early. Here is what happens:
- Check-in: Present your IDs to the proctor. Your name must match your PTCB registration exactly.
- Security procedures: You will be photographed and may undergo a palm vein scan. All personal items (phone, wallet, keys, notes) must be stored in a locker.
- Prohibited items: No phones, watches, food, drinks, study materials, or scratch paper from outside. The center provides erasable noteboards or scratch paper.
- Assigned workstation: The proctor escorts you to your computer. The exam software includes a brief tutorial before the timed exam begins.
During the Exam
The PTCB exam consists of 90 questions to be completed in 2 hours (120 minutes). Of these, 80 questions are scored and 10 are unscored pretest questions (you will not know which are which). Key strategies:
- Pace yourself: Aim to spend about 1 minute 20 seconds per question. Check your time at the 30-question and 60-question marks.
- Read carefully: Read each question and all answer choices completely before selecting your answer
- Flag and move on: If a question stumps you, flag it and come back after answering the questions you know
- Eliminate wrong answers: Even if unsure, eliminating 1-2 obviously wrong answers improves your odds
- Do not change answers: Research shows your first instinct is usually correct unless you have a clear reason to change
- Use the noteboards: Write down formulas, drug suffixes, or other quick-reference information at the start of the exam while it is fresh in your mind
Question Format
All PTCB questions are four-option multiple choice. There is no penalty for guessing, so never leave a question blank. Some questions may include images, calculations, or scenario-based presentations.
After the Exam
When you finish, you will receive a preliminary pass/fail result on screen at the testing center. Official results and your score report are available through your PTCB account within 1 to 3 weeks. If you pass, your CPhT certification is valid for 2 years before recertification is required.
Managing Test Anxiety
- Practice deep breathing if you feel anxious during the exam
- Remember that you have prepared for this and know the material
- Focus on one question at a time rather than worrying about the whole exam
- Take advantage of the full 2 hours; there is no bonus for finishing early
