PTCB Exam Content Domains: A Complete Breakdown

Understand the PTCB exam content domains and their weight percentages. Learn what topics are tested most and how to allocate your study time effectively.

Understanding the PTCB Exam Blueprint

The PTCB certification exam is organized into specific content domains that define what is tested and how much weight each area carries. Understanding this blueprint is essential for strategic study planning. You have 2 hours to answer 90 questions at a Pearson VUE testing center.

The Four Content Domains

The PTCB exam is divided into four major knowledge domains:

Domain 1: Medications (40%)

This is the largest domain, covering approximately 36 scored questions. Topics include:

  • Generic and brand name drug knowledge
  • Drug classifications and mechanisms of action
  • Therapeutic equivalence and drug interactions
  • Common and serious side effects
  • Dosage forms and routes of administration
  • Over-the-counter medications and supplements
  • Narrow therapeutic index drugs
  • Look-alike/sound-alike medications

Study tip: Spend the most time here. Master the Top 200 drugs, including brand/generic pairs, classifications, and key side effects.

Domain 2: Federal Requirements (12.5%)

This domain covers approximately 10 scored questions:

  • Controlled substance schedules and handling
  • DEA regulations and forms
  • HIPAA privacy and security requirements
  • FDA drug approval processes and recalls
  • Prescription requirements and transfer rules
  • Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act (pseudoephedrine sales)
  • Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA 90)

Domain 3: Patient Safety and Quality Assurance (26.25%)

This domain covers approximately 21 scored questions:

  • Error prevention strategies
  • High-alert medications and ISMP guidelines
  • Tall man lettering and look-alike drug names
  • Quality assurance and continuous quality improvement
  • Medication reconciliation
  • Infection control and USP standards
  • Sterile and non-sterile compounding procedures
  • Hazardous drug handling

Domain 4: Order Entry and Processing (21.25%)

This domain covers approximately 17 scored questions:

  • Prescription and medication order interpretation
  • Pharmacy calculations (day supply, dosage, concentrations)
  • Insurance claim processing and billing
  • Inventory management
  • Pharmacy information systems
  • NDC numbers and lot tracking
  • Prior authorization process

Strategic Study Planning

Allocate your study time proportionally to domain weights:

  • Medications (40%): At least 40% of your study time on drug knowledge
  • Patient Safety (26.25%): Roughly 25% on safety, compounding, and quality
  • Order Entry (21.25%): About 20% on calculations, billing, and processing
  • Federal Requirements (12.5%): About 15% on law and regulations

Within each domain, focus first on your weakest areas as identified by practice exams.
