Prescription Tracking and PDMP Systems
Understand prescription drug monitoring programs and tracking systems for the PTCB exam.
Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs
Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) are state-run electronic databases that track controlled substance prescriptions. PDMPs collect data on prescriber, patient, drug, dose, quantity, and pharmacy for every controlled substance dispensed. Most states require pharmacies to report to the PDMP within 24 hours of dispensing.
Healthcare providers and pharmacists query PDMPs to identify patients who may be obtaining controlled substances from multiple prescribers or pharmacies (doctor shopping). Many states now mandate PDMP checks before prescribing or dispensing controlled substances.
Pharmacy Workflow Integration
Modern pharmacy systems integrate PDMP queries into the dispensing workflow, allowing pharmacists to check patient history without leaving the pharmacy management system. This integration improves compliance with mandatory checking requirements and reduces workload.
Track and trace systems for drug supply chain security, required by the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA), use unique product identifiers to track medications from manufacturer to pharmacy, helping verify authenticity and facilitate recalls.
