What Is CPhT-Adv?

The Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT-Adv) credential is PTCB's recognition for experienced pharmacy technicians who demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills. It represents the next step beyond the standard CPhT certification and signals to employers that you are ready for expanded responsibilities and leadership roles.

Eligibility Requirements

To sit for the CPhT-Adv exam, you must meet all of the following:

Hold an active CPhT certification from PTCB
Have completed at least 4 years of work experience as a pharmacy technician, OR have completed a PTCB-recognized education program plus 2 years of work experience
Be in good standing with no current disciplinary actions

Exam Content

The CPhT-Adv exam covers advanced topics including:

Medication management and optimization - Complex drug therapy, medication reconciliation, adherence strategies
Quality and safety - CQI programs, root cause analysis, risk management
Regulatory compliance - Advanced understanding of federal and state regulations
Leadership and practice advancement - Training others, workflow optimization, professional development
Technology and informatics - Advanced pharmacy systems, data management, automation

Maintaining the Credential

CPhT-Adv certification requires 30 hours of continuing education every 2 years, with at least 15 hours in advanced practice topics. One hour each in pharmacy law and patient safety are also required.
