Pharmacy Recall Procedures and FDA Classifications

Understand FDA drug recall classifications and pharmacy recall procedures for the PTCB exam.

FDA Recall Classifications

Drug recalls are classified by the FDA based on the severity of the health risk. Class I recalls involve products that could cause serious health problems or death. Class II recalls involve products that may cause temporary or reversible health problems. Class III recalls involve products unlikely to cause adverse health effects but that violate FDA regulations.

Most recalls are voluntary, initiated by the manufacturer. The FDA can also mandate a recall when necessary. Pharmacy technicians must be familiar with recall procedures and act promptly when notified.

Pharmacy Recall Procedures

When a recall is received, the pharmacy must immediately identify and quarantine affected products by matching lot numbers and NDC codes. Recalled products are separated from active inventory and returned according to manufacturer or wholesaler instructions.

For Class I recalls, patients who received the affected product should be notified. Documentation of all recall activities, including the recall notice, affected quantities, patient notifications, and disposition of recalled products, must be maintained.

Exam Tips

Recall classification and procedures are commonly tested. Use PTCB flashcards and mini exams to prepare.
