Pharmacy Immunization Services and Tech Roles
Understand pharmacy-based immunization services and the expanding role of pharmacy technicians.
Pharmacy Immunizations
Pharmacies have become major providers of vaccinations, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic expanded pharmacist and technician authority to administer vaccines. Common pharmacy-administered vaccines include influenza, COVID-19, shingles (Zoster), pneumococcal, and Tdap.
The PREP Act and subsequent federal and state legislation have authorized pharmacy technicians to administer vaccines under pharmacist supervision in many states. This expanded scope requires additional training and certification.
Technician Responsibilities
Pharmacy technicians involved in immunization services may screen patients using questionnaires, prepare vaccines for administration, administer injections (where authorized), document vaccinations in state immunization registries, and manage vaccine inventory including cold chain requirements.
Vaccine storage is critical: most vaccines require refrigeration between 2-8 degrees Celsius, while some (like mRNA COVID vaccines) require ultra-cold storage. Temperature logs must be maintained and excursions documented and reported.
