Pharmacy Ethics and Professional Standards for PTCB
Review pharmacy ethics and professional conduct standards relevant to the PTCB certification exam.
Ethical Principles in Pharmacy
Pharmacy technicians are held to professional and ethical standards that protect patients and maintain public trust. Key ethical principles include beneficence (acting in the patient's best interest), non-maleficence (do no harm), autonomy (respecting patient decisions), and justice (fair treatment for all patients).
The PTCB Code of Conduct requires certified technicians to maintain competence, act with integrity, protect patient confidentiality, and report unsafe practices. Violations can result in revocation of certification.
Professional Responsibilities
Pharmacy technicians must work within their scope of practice and never perform tasks reserved for pharmacists, such as clinical counseling, drug utilization review decisions, or final prescription verification (except in states with tech-check-tech programs). Recognizing scope limitations is both an ethical and legal responsibility.
Technicians should also report errors honestly, refuse to participate in fraudulent activities, and maintain continuing education requirements. Professional growth through lifelong learning benefits both the technician and their patients.
