Pharmacy Automation and Robotic Dispensing Systems

Learn about pharmacy robots and automated dispensing systems commonly tested on the PTCB exam.

Robotic Dispensing

Pharmacy robots automate the counting, labeling, and dispensing of medications. These systems can fill prescriptions faster and more accurately than manual processes. Robots like the Parata and ScriptPro systems handle high-volume medications, freeing pharmacy staff for clinical tasks and patient interactions.

Central fill pharmacies use large-scale automation to fill prescriptions that are then shipped to retail locations. This model allows retail pharmacies to focus on patient care while the central facility handles dispensing volume.

Benefits and Limitations

Automation reduces dispensing errors, improves efficiency, and provides better inventory tracking. Barcodes on each medication cell ensure the correct drug is dispensed. However, robots require regular maintenance, calibration, and cell replenishment by trained technicians.

Not all medications are suitable for automation. Refrigerated drugs, controlled substances, and low-volume items typically remain in the manual workflow. Pharmacy technicians must understand both automated and manual dispensing processes.
