Par Level Inventory Management in Pharmacy
Learn how par levels work in pharmacy inventory management for the PTCB certification exam.
What Are Par Levels?
Par levels represent the minimum and maximum quantities of each medication that should be on the pharmacy shelf. When stock drops to the minimum (reorder point), an order is placed to bring inventory back to the maximum level. Par levels are based on usage patterns, delivery schedules, and storage capacity.
Setting appropriate par levels prevents both stockouts (running out of a medication) and overstock (tying up capital in excess inventory). Par levels should be reviewed and adjusted regularly based on seasonal changes and prescribing trends.
Reorder Points and Lead Time
The reorder point accounts for lead time, which is the time between placing an order and receiving it. If a pharmacy uses 100 tablets daily and the wholesaler delivers in 2 days, the reorder point should be at least 200 tablets plus a safety stock buffer.
Automated inventory systems can track usage and generate orders automatically when par levels are reached, reducing manual effort and minimizing errors.
