The Opioid Crisis and the Pharmacy Technician Role
Understand the opioid crisis and how pharmacy technicians contribute to combating it for the PTCB exam.
Understanding the Crisis
The opioid epidemic has killed hundreds of thousands of Americans and fundamentally changed pharmacy practice. Common opioids include hydrocodone (Vicodin), oxycodone (OxyContin, Percocet), morphine, and fentanyl. These Schedule II controlled substances require careful dispensing and monitoring.
Pharmacy technicians play a front-line role in opioid safety by verifying prescriptions, checking PDMP databases, identifying early refill attempts, and recognizing signs of prescription fraud or diversion.
Pharmacy Interventions
Pharmacies now routinely stock and dispense naloxone (Narcan), the opioid overdose reversal agent. Many states allow pharmacists to dispense naloxone without a prescription under standing orders. Pharmacy technicians help educate patients about naloxone availability and proper use.
Drug take-back programs allow patients to safely dispose of unused opioids, reducing the risk of misuse and diversion. The DEA sponsors National Prescription Drug Take-Back Days, and many pharmacies have permanent collection bins.
