Nuclear Pharmacy Basics for the PTCB Exam

Learn the fundamentals of nuclear pharmacy including radiopharmaceuticals and safety for the PTCB exam.

What Is Nuclear Pharmacy?

Nuclear pharmacy is a specialized practice involving the preparation and dispensing of radioactive materials (radiopharmaceuticals) used in diagnostic imaging and therapeutic procedures. Nuclear pharmacists and trained technicians prepare unit doses of radioactive drugs, typically for PET scans, bone scans, and thyroid studies.

Radiopharmaceuticals have very short half-lives, meaning they must be prepared and administered quickly. Technetium-99m (Tc-99m) is the most commonly used radioisotope in diagnostic imaging, with a half-life of approximately 6 hours.

Radiation Safety

The principles of radiation safety are time, distance, and shielding. Minimize time spent near radioactive materials, maximize distance from the source, and use lead shielding to reduce exposure. Personnel working with radiopharmaceuticals wear dosimetry badges to monitor cumulative radiation exposure.

Radioactive waste must be handled according to Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations. Some waste can be held for decay until it reaches background radiation levels, while other waste requires specialized disposal.

Exam Awareness

Nuclear pharmacy is a niche but testable PTCB area. Review basics with flashcards and mini exams.
