Medication Therapy Management: The Technician Support Role
Learn how pharmacy technicians support medication therapy management programs by collecting patient data, scheduling reviews, and preparing medication lists for pharmacists.
What Is Medication Therapy Management?
Medication Therapy Management (MTM) is a clinical service provided by pharmacists to optimize drug therapy and improve patient outcomes. While pharmacists perform the clinical review and make therapeutic recommendations, pharmacy technicians play an essential supporting role that makes MTM programs efficient and effective.
MTM Services Include
- Comprehensive Medication Review (CMR) - A thorough review of all medications (prescription, OTC, supplements) to identify and resolve drug therapy problems
- Targeted Medication Review (TMR) - A focused review addressing specific medication-related issues
- Medication Reconciliation - Comparing medication lists across care transitions
- Patient Education - Helping patients understand their medications, disease management, and adherence strategies
The Technician's Role in MTM
Technicians support MTM by:
- Identifying eligible patients - Reviewing patient profiles to find those who meet MTM criteria (e.g., multiple chronic conditions, multiple medications, high drug costs)
- Scheduling appointments - Contacting patients to schedule CMR sessions with the pharmacist
- Collecting patient information - Gathering medication lists, allergy histories, and relevant lab values before the review
- Preparing documentation - Organizing patient information and forms for the pharmacist's review
- Following up - Contacting patients after MTM sessions to reinforce pharmacist recommendations and check on adherence
Medicare Part D and MTM
Medicare Part D plans are required to offer MTM programs to eligible beneficiaries. Eligibility criteria typically include having multiple chronic conditions, taking multiple Part D medications, and exceeding a specified annual drug cost threshold. Pharmacies receive reimbursement for MTM services.
Building MTM Skills
Working in MTM builds skills that translate to advanced practice roles. Understanding drug therapy problems, patient communication, and clinical workflows makes technicians more effective in any practice setting.
MTM experience complements your PTCB certification and positions you for leadership opportunities in clinical pharmacy.
