Medication Therapy Management (MTM) for Pharmacy Techs

Learn about MTM services and the pharmacy technician role in medication therapy management for the PTCB exam.

What Is MTM?

Medication Therapy Management (MTM) is a service provided by pharmacists to optimize medication use, improve outcomes, and reduce adverse events. MTM includes comprehensive medication reviews, identifying drug therapy problems, creating medication action plans, and follow-up with patients and providers.

Medicare Part D plans are required to offer MTM to eligible beneficiaries who meet certain criteria, such as multiple chronic conditions, multiple medications, and high annual drug costs. This makes MTM an important pharmacy service.

Pharmacy Technician Role in MTM

While pharmacists perform the clinical components of MTM, pharmacy technicians play a supporting role by identifying eligible patients, scheduling appointments, preparing medication lists, documenting services, and submitting billing claims for MTM services.

Technicians may also prepare personal medication records (PMRs) for patients, which list all medications with doses, directions, and purposes. These records help patients understand and manage their medication regimens.
