IV Flow Rate Calculations for PTCB Exam Prep
Master IV drip rate and infusion time calculations commonly tested on the PTCB certification exam.
Drops Per Minute Calculations
IV flow rate calculations determine how fast an intravenous solution should be administered. The basic formula is: drops per minute = (volume in mL x drop factor) / time in minutes. Drop factors vary by IV set: macrodrip sets are typically 10, 15, or 20 drops/mL, while microdrip sets are 60 drops/mL.
Example: Infuse 1000 mL over 8 hours using a 15 drops/mL set. First convert 8 hours to 480 minutes. Then: (1000 x 15) / 480 = 31.25, rounded to 31 drops per minute.
mL Per Hour Calculations
When using an infusion pump, you calculate mL per hour instead of drops per minute. Simply divide the total volume by the total time in hours. For 1000 mL over 8 hours: 1000 / 8 = 125 mL/hr.
Some problems require calculating infusion time: time in hours = volume / rate. If 500 mL runs at 75 mL/hr, it takes approximately 6.67 hours, or about 6 hours and 40 minutes.
