Technology in Pharmacy Inventory Management

Learn how technology streamlines pharmacy inventory management for the PTCB exam.

Automated Inventory Systems

Modern pharmacies use technology to optimize inventory management. Perpetual inventory systems automatically update stock levels as medications are received, dispensed, and returned. When stock drops below the par level, the system generates a purchase order for review and submission to the wholesaler.

RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology is emerging in pharmacy for tracking medications throughout the supply chain. Unlike barcodes, RFID tags can be read without line of sight and multiple tags can be scanned simultaneously, speeding up inventory counts.

Analytics and Optimization

Inventory analytics help pharmacies optimize stock levels based on historical usage data, seasonal trends, and formulary changes. ABC analysis categorizes inventory by value: A items (high value, low quantity) receive the most attention, B items are moderate, and C items (low value, high quantity) receive less scrutiny.

Turnover rate measures how quickly inventory is sold and replaced. A higher turnover rate generally indicates efficient inventory management and less capital tied up in stock.
