Insulin Pen Devices and Proper Technique: A Pharmacy Guide

Learn about insulin pen types, proper injection technique, and storage requirements. Vital patient education knowledge for PTCB techs.

Insulin Pen Devices in Pharmacy

Insulin pens have become the preferred delivery method for many patients with diabetes. Pharmacy technicians must understand the different types of insulin pens, storage requirements, and proper technique to support patient education and dispensing accuracy.

Types of Insulin Pens

Insulin pens come in two main categories:

  • Disposable prefilled pens contain a set amount of insulin and are discarded when empty (such as Lantus SoloStar, Humalog KwikPen, NovoLog FlexPen)
  • Reusable pens accept replaceable insulin cartridges (such as NovoPen and HumaPen)

Proper Injection Technique

Pharmacy staff should be familiar with the correct steps for insulin pen use:

  • Attach a new pen needle before each injection
  • Prime the pen by dialing 2 units and pressing the injection button until insulin appears at the needle tip
  • Dial the prescribed dose
  • Insert the needle at a 90-degree angle into the injection site
  • Press the injection button fully and count to 10 before withdrawing
  • Remove and safely dispose of the needle after each use

Storage Requirements

  • Unopened insulin pens should be stored in the refrigerator (36 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Once in use, most pens can be stored at room temperature for 14 to 56 days depending on the product
  • Never freeze insulin or expose it to extreme heat
  • Cloudy insulin (NPH) must be gently rolled to resuspend before use
