HIPAA Compliance for Pharmacy Technicians

Review HIPAA privacy and security rules that pharmacy technicians must follow for the PTCB exam.

HIPAA Privacy Rule

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) protects patients' protected health information (PHI). Pharmacy technicians handle PHI daily and must understand their obligations. PHI includes any individually identifiable health information such as name, date of birth, prescription history, and insurance information.

The minimum necessary standard requires that only the minimum amount of PHI needed to accomplish a task should be used or disclosed. Pharmacy staff should not access patient records out of curiosity or share information beyond what is needed for treatment, payment, or healthcare operations.

Security and Breach Prevention

The HIPAA Security Rule applies to electronic PHI (ePHI) and requires administrative, physical, and technical safeguards. This includes password protection, screen locks, encrypted communications, and secure disposal of documents containing PHI.

Breaches must be reported and can result in significant fines and penalties for both the pharmacy and the individual involved. Pharmacy technicians should report any suspected breaches immediately through proper channels.
