Drug Returns and Reverse Distribution in Pharmacy
Understand the process of returning medications and working with reverse distributors for the PTCB exam.
Returning Medications
Pharmacies must have procedures for returning expired, damaged, or recalled medications. Most wholesalers accept returns within specific timeframes, typically up to 12 months after purchase and before the expiration date. Returned items must be in original packaging with intact labeling.
Controlled substances have additional return requirements under DEA regulations. They cannot be returned to a wholesaler but must be sent to a registered reverse distributor using DEA Form 222 for Schedule II drugs or proper documentation for Schedules III-V.
Reverse Distributors
Reverse distributors are DEA-registered facilities that handle the destruction and return credit for medications. They accept expired, recalled, and unwanted drugs from pharmacies and manage the disposal process in compliance with federal and state regulations.
Pharmacies receive partial credit for returned medications, which helps offset losses from expired inventory. Proper return processing is both a compliance requirement and a financial best practice.
