CPOE and Electronic Prescribing in Modern Pharmacy
Learn about computerized provider order entry and e-prescribing systems for the PTCB exam.
What Is CPOE?
Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) is a system that allows healthcare providers to enter medication orders electronically rather than on paper. CPOE systems include built-in clinical decision support (CDS) that checks for drug interactions, allergies, duplicate therapy, and dosing errors in real time.
CPOE reduces errors caused by illegible handwriting, transcription mistakes, and missing information. Studies have shown significant reductions in medication errors when CPOE is implemented in hospital settings.
Electronic Prescribing (e-Prescribing)
E-prescribing transmits prescriptions electronically from the prescriber's office directly to the pharmacy. This eliminates paper prescriptions and reduces errors from misinterpretation. EPCS (Electronic Prescribing for Controlled Substances) allows Schedule II-V prescriptions to be sent electronically with additional security requirements.
E-prescribing systems also provide formulary information to prescribers, allowing them to choose covered medications and reduce insurance rejections. This improves efficiency for both prescriber offices and pharmacies.
