Beta-Blocker Essentials for the PTCB Exam

Learn the key beta-blockers, their indications, and side effects commonly tested on the PTCB certification exam.

What Are Beta-Blockers?

Beta-blockers reduce heart rate and blood pressure by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors. They are used for hypertension, angina, arrhythmias, and heart failure. Recognizing the "-olol" suffix is essential for the PTCB exam.

Commonly tested beta-blockers include metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol-XL), atenolol (Tenormin), propranolol (Inderal), and carvedilol (Coreg). Metoprolol and atenolol are cardioselective, meaning they primarily affect the heart.

Side Effects and Contraindications

Key side effects include bradycardia, fatigue, cold extremities, and masking hypoglycemia symptoms in diabetic patients. Beta-blockers should not be abruptly discontinued because rebound tachycardia can occur.

Non-selective beta-blockers like propranolol can worsen asthma by blocking beta-2 receptors in the lungs. This is a frequently tested concept on the PTCB exam.
