Barcode Scanning and Medication Safety
Understand how barcode technology improves medication safety in pharmacy for the PTCB exam.
Barcode Medication Administration
Barcode technology is a critical safety tool in pharmacy. Barcode medication administration (BCMA) systems scan the medication barcode and the patient's identification wristband to verify the right patient is receiving the right drug, dose, and route at the right time. This technology significantly reduces medication errors in hospital settings.
National Drug Codes (NDCs) are unique identifiers encoded in medication barcodes. The NDC consists of three segments: the labeler code (manufacturer), product code (drug, strength, dosage form), and package code (container size). Pharmacy technicians use NDCs daily for dispensing and inventory management.
Pharmacy Applications
In retail pharmacy, barcode scanning during dispensing provides a final verification step. The scanned barcode is compared against the prescription data to confirm the correct medication is being dispensed. This catch mechanism prevents many potential errors from reaching the patient.
Barcode scanning also improves inventory accuracy, streamlines receiving processes, and enables automated reorder triggers when stock reaches par levels.
