Automated Dispensing Cabinets in Hospital Pharmacy

Learn about ADCs like Pyxis and Omnicell for hospital medication dispensing on the PTCB exam.

What Are ADCs?

Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) such as Pyxis (BD) and Omnicell are computerized medication storage and dispensing units located on nursing units in hospitals. They provide secure, point-of-care access to medications while maintaining detailed electronic records of every transaction.

ADCs use biometric identification (fingerprint) or login credentials to control access. Nurses retrieve medications for specific patients, and the system records who accessed which drug, for which patient, and at what time. This creates a complete audit trail.

Pharmacy Technician Role

Pharmacy technicians are responsible for restocking ADCs, which involves removing expired medications, checking for recalled items, and refilling each pocket with the correct medication. Barcode scanning during restocking verifies the right drug is placed in the right pocket.

Controlled substances in ADCs require additional security features including locked individual drawers and mandatory witness functions for waste. Discrepancies must be investigated and resolved promptly.
