Antidepressant Drug Classes for PTCB Exam Success
Master SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, and MAOIs for the PTCB certification exam with this comprehensive drug class review.
SSRIs and SNRIs
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are first-line treatments for depression and anxiety. Common SSRIs include fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), escitalopram (Lexapro), and paroxetine (Paxil). They work by increasing serotonin levels in the brain.
SNRIs like venlafaxine (Effexor) and duloxetine (Cymbalta) inhibit reuptake of both serotonin and norepinephrine. Duloxetine is also approved for neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia.
TCAs and MAOIs
Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) such as amitriptyline and nortriptyline are older medications with more side effects including sedation, dry mouth, and cardiac risks. They are sometimes used for chronic pain.
MAOIs like phenelzine require strict dietary restrictions to avoid tyramine-containing foods, which can cause hypertensive crisis. This dietary interaction is a commonly tested PTCB concept.
Key Exam Points
All antidepressants carry a black box warning for suicidal ideation in young adults. Serotonin syndrome is a serious risk when combining serotonergic drugs. Study these details with our PTCB flashcards and mini exams.
