Anticoagulant Medications for the PTCB Exam

Review anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications including warfarin, heparin, and DOACs for PTCB exam preparation.

Warfarin and Heparin

Anticoagulants prevent blood clot formation and are critical medications in any pharmacy. Warfarin (Coumadin) is an oral anticoagulant monitored by INR levels, with a target range typically between 2.0 and 3.0. It has numerous drug and food interactions, especially with vitamin K-rich foods.

Heparin is an injectable anticoagulant used in hospital settings, monitored by aPTT. Low-molecular-weight heparins like enoxaparin (Lovenox) are given subcutaneously and require less monitoring.

Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOACs)

Newer DOACs include rivaroxaban (Xarelto), apixaban (Eliquis), and dabigatran (Pradaxa). These require less monitoring than warfarin and have fewer dietary restrictions. However, they are more expensive and some lack reversal agents.

Antiplatelet agents like clopidogrel (Plavix) and aspirin work differently by inhibiting platelet aggregation rather than the clotting cascade.

Review for Exam Day

Anticoagulant questions appear frequently on the PTCB exam. Practice with our flashcards and take a practice exam to ensure you can distinguish between these medication classes.
