CP Exam Day: What to Expect at PSI Testing Centers
Everything You Need to Know About CP Exam Day
Test day can be stressful if you do not know what to expect. Understanding the logistics of your PSI testing center visit eliminates surprises and lets you focus entirely on the exam. This guide walks you through every step of the exam day experience.
Before You Arrive
Preparation for test day actually begins the night before. Follow these guidelines:
- Confirm your appointment: Log in to your PSI account and verify the date, time, and location of your exam. Print or save the confirmation email.
- Prepare identification: You will need two forms of valid ID. At least one must be a government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or state ID). The name on your IDs must match the name on your exam registration exactly.
- Plan your route: Know exactly how to get to the testing center. Factor in traffic and parking time. Arrive 30 minutes early.
- Get a good night's sleep: Do not cram the night before. Your brain needs rest to perform at its best. Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep.
- Prepare what you need: Lay out your IDs, keys, and anything else you need. Check the testing center's policies about what you can and cannot bring.
The Check-In Process
When you arrive at the PSI testing center:
- Present your IDs to the test administrator
- Read and sign the testing center's rules and regulations
- Store personal belongings in a provided locker (you cannot take personal items into the testing room, including phones, watches, bags, books, or notes)
- You may receive scratch paper or a dry-erase board for notes during the exam
- The test administrator will escort you to your testing station
What You Cannot Bring
PSI testing centers are strict about what enters the testing room:
- No cell phones or electronic devices of any kind
- No bags, purses, or backpacks
- No study materials, notes, or reference books
- No food or drinks (some centers allow water in a clear container)
- No watches (including smart watches)
- No hats, scarves, or large jewelry (unless for religious purposes, which must be cleared in advance)
The Testing Environment
The testing room is monitored by cameras and proctors. You will be seated at a computer workstation with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Key features of the testing environment:
- The computer interface will include a tutorial before the actual exam begins
- You can flag questions to review later
- A timer will display your remaining time
- Noise-canceling headphones or earplugs may be available upon request
- If you need a break, raise your hand. Break time counts against your exam time.
Strategies During the Exam
Once the exam begins, use these strategies to maximize your performance:
- Read every question carefully: Look for key words like "except," "not," "always," "never," "most likely," and "best." These qualifiers change the meaning of the question entirely.
- Manage your time: Divide the total time by the number of questions to know approximately how long you can spend on each question. If you are spending more than two minutes on a single question, flag it and move on.
- Use the process of elimination: Even when you are unsure, you can often eliminate one or two obviously wrong answers. This significantly increases your odds of choosing correctly.
- Do not second-guess yourself: Research shows that your first instinct is more often correct than a changed answer, unless you have a specific reason for changing it.
- Flag and return: If a question stumps you, flag it and come back after completing the rest. Sometimes later questions will jog your memory or provide helpful context.
- Stay calm: If you encounter a difficult stretch of questions, do not panic. The exam includes questions of varying difficulty, and a hard question does not mean you are failing.
After the Exam
What happens after you submit your exam depends on the testing format:
- You may receive preliminary results immediately on screen
- Official results are provided by NALA, typically within a few weeks
- If you pass, you will receive your CP credential and can begin using the designation
- If you do not pass, NALA provides information about retaking the exam, including any waiting period and additional fees
