CP Exam 90-Day Study Plan: Your Week-by-Week Roadmap to Passing

Why You Need a Structured Study Plan

The Certified Paralegal (CP) exam administered by NALA covers a broad range of legal topics, and many candidates feel overwhelmed by the volume of material. A structured 90-day study plan breaks the preparation into manageable weekly segments, ensuring comprehensive coverage without burnout. This plan is designed for working paralegals and students who need to balance study time with other responsibilities. By following this roadmap consistently, you will build the knowledge and confidence needed to pass the exam on your first attempt.

Weeks 1 through 3: Foundation Building

The first three weeks focus on building your foundational knowledge across the major subject areas tested on the exam.

Week 1: Communications and Legal Research

Start with communication skills and legal research because these topics underpin every other area of law. Study grammar, writing conventions, and professional communication standards. Review legal research methodology, including primary and secondary sources, case reporters, legal databases, and citation formats. Dedicate at least one hour per day to active study, and use flashcards to reinforce terminology and concepts you learn during each session.

Week 2: Ethics and Professional Responsibility

Ethics is a critical component of the CP exam and one of the areas where candidates most frequently lose points. Study the NALA Code of Ethics, the ABA Model Guidelines for the Utilization of Paralegal Services, unauthorized practice of law, client confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and ethical obligations in billing and trust account management. Take practice quizzes at the end of each study session to gauge your understanding.

Week 3: Legal Terminology and the American Legal System

Spend this week reviewing the structure of the American legal system, including federal and state court systems, jurisdiction, venue, sources of law, and the legislative process. Build your legal vocabulary by studying common terms, Latin phrases, and procedural concepts. Strong foundational knowledge here will pay dividends when you tackle substantive law topics in later weeks.

Weeks 4 through 8: Substantive Law Deep Dive

During this phase, you will work through the major substantive law areas one week at a time.

Week 4: Civil Litigation and Procedure

Study the litigation process from complaint through appeal. Cover pleadings, discovery methods, motions, trial procedure, and post-trial remedies. Pay special attention to federal rules of civil procedure, as these are frequently tested. Practice identifying the correct procedural step for various scenarios presented in exam questions.

Week 5: Contracts and Commercial Law

Review contract formation (offer, acceptance, consideration), defenses to enforcement, breach and remedies, and UCC Article 2 (sales) and Article 3 (negotiable instruments). Focus on distinguishing common law contract rules from UCC rules, as the exam frequently tests this distinction.

Week 6: Torts and Personal Injury

Cover intentional torts, negligence elements, strict liability, products liability, and damages calculation. Understand the differences between comparative and contributory negligence systems. Use practice questions to apply the elements of each tort to factual scenarios.

Week 7: Criminal Law and Procedure

Study criminal law concepts including elements of common crimes, constitutional protections (Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Eighth Amendments), criminal procedure from arrest through sentencing, and the appeals process. Focus on search and seizure rules and Miranda rights, which are frequently tested topics.

Week 8: Real Estate, Wills, and Trusts

Review property law concepts including estates in land, deeds, title insurance, closings, and recording statutes. Cover wills (requirements, types, revocation), trusts (creation, types, duties of trustees), and estate administration procedures.

Weeks 9 through 11: Practice and Review

These weeks shift from learning new material to reinforcing what you have studied and identifying weak areas.

Week 9: Corporate and Business Law

Study business entity formation, corporate governance, agency relationships, and employment law basics. Then take a comprehensive practice exam covering all subjects studied so far. Review your results to identify areas needing additional attention.

Week 10: Targeted Review

Based on your practice exam results, spend this week focusing on your weakest subjects. Revisit your notes, work through additional practice questions in those areas, and use flashcards to reinforce concepts that are not sticking. Do not spend time re-studying topics you have already mastered.

Week 11: Full Practice Exams

Take two full-length practice exams under timed conditions. Simulate the actual testing environment as closely as possible. Review every question you missed and understand why the correct answer is correct and why your selected answer was wrong. This process of active error analysis is one of the most effective study techniques available.

Weeks 12 and 13: Final Preparation

The final two weeks are about consolidation and confidence building.

Week 12: Quick Review and Flashcards

Do a rapid review of all subjects using your notes and flashcards. Focus on high-yield topics that appear most frequently on the exam. Do not try to learn new material at this stage. Instead, reinforce what you already know and shore up any remaining weak spots.

Week 13: Rest and Light Review

In the final week, reduce your study intensity. Do light review sessions, get plenty of sleep, and take care of your physical and mental health. Confidence and a clear mind on exam day are just as important as knowledge. Review the exam logistics (location, timing, what to bring) so there are no surprises.
