BAR Exam Overview
BAR (Business Analysis and Reporting) replaced BEC in January 2024 as part of the CPA Evolution. It covers 72 multiple-choice questions and 7 task-based simulations across four testlets. You have 4 hours. The passing score is 75. BAR focuses on data analytics, information technology, economics, financial management, and corporate governance. It is generally considered the least technical section.
Data Analytics
Data analytics is a new emphasis area in BAR. Study data types (structured, semi-structured, unstructured), data visualization best practices, statistical measures (mean, median, mode, standard deviation), regression analysis, correlation, and ETL processes (Extract, Transform, Load). Understand how data analytics tools are used in accounting and auditing, and know the difference between descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analytics.
Information Technology
IT topics include cloud computing models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS), cybersecurity threats and controls, IT general controls vs. application controls, business continuity and disaster recovery planning, and emerging technologies (blockchain, AI, RPA). Know the COBIT framework basics, database concepts (relational databases, SQL basics), and the role of IT in internal controls.
Internal Controls & COSO
Study the COSO Internal Control-Integrated Framework (five components: control environment, risk assessment, control activities, information and communication, and monitoring activities) and the 17 principles. Also study the COSO ERM framework. Understand how to evaluate control deficiencies, significant deficiencies, and material weaknesses. Know SOX 302 and 404 requirements.
Corporate Governance
Corporate governance covers the roles of the board of directors, audit committee, management, and external auditors. Study SOX provisions (Secs. 201, 203, 206, 301, 302, 404, 406, 806, 906) and Dodd-Frank Act requirements. Understand the audit committee requirements, related-party transaction oversight, whistleblower protections, and executive compensation governance.
Economics
Economics covers both micro and macro. Micro topics: supply and demand, elasticity, market structures (perfect competition, monopolistic competition, oligopoly, monopoly), consumer and producer surplus, and externalities. Macro topics: GDP, inflation, unemployment, monetary policy (Federal Reserve tools), fiscal policy, business cycles, and international trade (comparative advantage, exchange rates, balance of payments).
Financial Management
Financial management topics include capital budgeting (NPV, IRR, payback period, profitability index), cost of capital (WACC, CAPM), capital structure (debt vs. equity, Moody-Miller), working capital management (cash conversion cycle, receivables, inventory, payables), and risk management (hedging, derivatives basics, types of financial risk). These topics are calculation-heavy and high-value on the exam.
Cost Accounting & Variance Analysis
Study job-order costing, process costing, activity-based costing (ABC), and standard costing. Variance analysis is heavily tested: know how to calculate and interpret material price and quantity variances, labor rate and efficiency variances, and overhead variances (spending, efficiency, volume). Transfer pricing and cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis are also important.
Study Tips for BAR
BAR is the broadest section with the lowest average study time (250-300 hours). Focus on financial management calculations and variance analysis since they are the most testable. Economics concepts are largely intuitive if you took a college course. IT and data analytics rely on understanding concepts rather than formulas. Practice SOX section numbers until you can cite them from memory.
