CPA BAR (ISC/TCP/BAR) Most Tested Topics: Discipline Section Focus Areas

Understand the most tested topics on the CPA discipline sections. Whether you chose ISC, TCP, or BAR, learn where to focus your study time for the best results.

Understanding the CPA Discipline Sections

Under the CPA Evolution model, candidates choose one of three discipline sections in addition to the core AUD, FAR, and REG exams. The discipline sections are Information Systems and Controls (ISC), Tax Compliance and Planning (TCP), and Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR). Each has its own blueprint and testing emphases. This guide covers the most tested topics across all three disciplines to help you focus your preparation regardless of which section you chose.

ISC: Information Systems and Controls

IT General Controls

IT general controls are the most heavily tested area within ISC. This includes access controls (logical and physical), change management procedures, IT operations controls, and program development controls. You need to understand how IT general controls support application controls and how weaknesses in IT general controls can undermine the reliability of automated controls throughout the system.

Data Management and Governance

Data governance frameworks, data quality management, data lifecycle management, and database concepts are consistently tested. You should understand relational database concepts, data normalization, and how data integrity controls work. Data privacy regulations and their impact on information systems are increasingly tested topics.

Cybersecurity and Risk Assessment

Cybersecurity frameworks, threat identification, vulnerability assessment, and incident response planning appear frequently. The SOC (System and Organization Controls) reporting framework, including SOC 1, SOC 2, and SOC 3 reports and their differences, is a heavily tested topic. Understanding the Trust Services Criteria (security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality, and privacy) is essential.

System Development and Implementation

The systems development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, design, testing, implementation, and maintenance phases, is a core ISC topic. Change management procedures, system conversion approaches (parallel, phased, pilot, direct), and post-implementation review processes are tested regularly.

TCP: Tax Compliance and Planning

Individual Tax Planning

Advanced individual tax planning strategies are the cornerstone of TCP. This includes timing strategies for income recognition and deduction acceleration, retirement plan contributions and distributions, education planning, and charitable giving strategies. Alternative minimum tax calculations and planning to minimize AMT exposure are also tested.

Entity Selection and Formation

Comparing the tax implications of operating as a sole proprietorship, partnership, S corporation, or C corporation is a core TCP topic. You need to analyze factors including self-employment tax, employment tax, entity-level taxation, and the qualified business income deduction to recommend optimal entity structures for different client situations.

Multi-Jurisdictional Taxation

State and local tax concepts, including nexus determination, apportionment formulas, and state conformity to federal tax law, are tested on TCP. International tax concepts including Subpart F income, GILTI, FDII, and foreign tax credits appear at a conceptual level. Transfer pricing concepts are also tested.

Tax Research and Communication

TCP tests your ability to research tax issues using primary sources including the Internal Revenue Code, Treasury regulations, revenue rulings, and case law. Communicating tax advice to clients, including the standards for written tax advice under Circular 230, is also a tested skill.

BAR: Business Analysis and Reporting

Financial Statement Analysis

Ratio analysis, trend analysis, and financial statement interpretation are core BAR topics. You need to calculate and interpret liquidity ratios, profitability ratios, leverage ratios, and efficiency ratios. Comparing financial performance across periods and against industry benchmarks is frequently tested.

Managerial and Cost Accounting

Cost-volume-profit analysis, variance analysis, budgeting, and performance measurement are heavily tested on BAR. You should understand job order and process costing, activity-based costing, standard costing, and the balanced scorecard. Transfer pricing for performance evaluation purposes also appears.

Economic Concepts and Financial Management

Time value of money calculations, capital budgeting techniques (NPV, IRR, payback period), working capital management, and capital structure decisions are tested on BAR. Economic concepts including supply and demand, market structures, and business cycles appear at a foundational level.

Prospective Financial Information

Financial forecasts and projections, including the assumptions underlying them and the professional standards for examining prospective financial information, are tested on BAR. Understanding the difference between a forecast and a projection and the appropriate uses of each is important.

Study Strategy Across Discipline Sections

Regardless of which discipline section you chose, focus on understanding the practical application of concepts rather than memorizing definitions. The discipline sections are designed to test higher-order thinking skills, so expect questions that present scenarios requiring analysis and judgment rather than simple recall. Practice with simulations that mirror the complexity of real exam questions to build your analytical skills.
