HR Metrics and Analytics

Cost Per Hire

The total cost associated with filling a vacant position. Includes internal costs (recruiter salaries, referral bonuses) and external costs (job boards, agency fees, background checks). Calculated as (total internal recruiting costs + total external recruiting costs) / total number of hires.

Compa-Ratio

A metric comparing an employee's actual pay to the midpoint of the pay range for their position. Calculated as (employee's pay / pay range midpoint) x 100. A compa-ratio of 100% means the employee is paid exactly at the midpoint. Used to evaluate pay equity and compensation positioning.

Return on Investment (ROI)

A financial metric measuring the profitability of an investment relative to its cost. In HR, commonly used to evaluate training programs, wellness initiatives, and technology implementations. Calculated as (net benefit / cost) x 100.

Time to Fill

Revenue Per Employee

Total revenue divided by the number of full-time equivalent employees. A productivity metric used to benchmark organizational efficiency against industry standards.

Strategic Planning

SWOT Analysis

A strategic planning tool that evaluates an organization's Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. Strengths and weaknesses are internal factors; opportunities and threats are external. Used by HR to align workforce strategies with business objectives.

PESTLE Analysis

A framework for analyzing the external macro-environment: Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, and Environmental factors. Helps HR leaders anticipate workforce impacts from external trends and regulatory changes.

Balanced Scorecard

A strategic management tool (developed by Kaplan and Norton) that measures organizational performance across four perspectives: financial, customer, internal processes, and learning/growth. HR metrics often align with the learning and growth perspective.

HR Business Partner (HRBP)

An HR professional who works closely with senior leadership to align HR strategy with business objectives. The HRBP model, popularized by Dave Ulrich, positions HR as a strategic partner rather than an administrative function.

Evidence-Based Decision Making

The practice of using data, research findings, and validated metrics to inform HR decisions rather than relying on intuition or anecdotal evidence. Central to the SHRM competency of analytical aptitude.

Financial Literacy for HR

Budget Variance

The difference between the budgeted (planned) amount and the actual amount spent. A positive variance means spending was under budget; a negative variance means over budget. HR leaders must track and explain variances in department budgets.
