NREMT EMT Exam Tips

Strategies for passing the Emergency Medical Technician section of the NREMT exam.

01

Master the patient assessment sequence

The NREMT EMT exam heavily tests systematic patient assessment. Know the exact order: scene size-up, primary survey (XABCDE), history taking (SAMPLE/OPQRST), secondary assessment, and reassessment. Most wrong answers on the exam skip a step or put steps out of order.

02

Know your EMT-level medications cold

You are responsible for six medications: aspirin (chest pain), epinephrine auto-injector (anaphylaxis), nitroglycerin (chest pain with prescription), oral glucose (hypoglycemia), albuterol (respiratory distress with prescription), and naloxone (opioid overdose). Know indications, contraindications, doses, and routes for each.

03

Think scene safety first on every question

Many EMT exam questions begin with a scenario. Before treating any patient, ensure scene safety and BSI/PPE. If the scene is not safe, the correct answer is almost always to stage and wait for the scene to be secured. This is the most fundamental principle in EMS.

04

Differentiate medical vs. trauma patients

The assessment approach differs between medical and trauma patients. Medical patients get a focused history first, then a physical exam. Trauma patients get a rapid physical exam first, then a history. The exam tests whether you can identify which approach is appropriate.

05

Practice with CAT-format questions

The NREMT uses Computer Adaptive Testing. You cannot go back to previous questions. Each question is selected based on your previous performance. Practice with adaptive question banks that mimic this format so you are comfortable committing to answers without the ability to review.
