1,000+ NREMT Flashcards - Free for EMT and Paramedic

Master every NREMT exam topic with spaced-repetition flashcards powered by the SM-2 algorithm. Mark cards as Known or Review Later, track your progress per section, and focus your study time where it matters most.

Why flashcards work for NREMT exam prep

The NREMT cognitive exam tests your ability to recall patient assessment procedures, treatment protocols, pharmacology, and EMS operations under time pressure. Flashcards are one of the most effective study methods because they force active recall - retrieving information from memory rather than passively rereading notes. Research consistently shows that active recall strengthens neural pathways and improves long-term retention compared to highlighting or re-reading.

Arteura's NREMT flashcards go beyond simple Q&A by incorporating spaced repetition using the SM-2 (SuperMemo 2) algorithm. When you review a card, you mark it as Known (you answered correctly) or Review Later (you need more practice). The system automatically schedules your next review - cards you know well appear less frequently, while cards you struggle with come back sooner. This ensures you spend your study time on the material that actually needs reinforcement, not content you have already mastered.

Each flashcard is mapped to one of the 2 NREMT certification levels, so you can study by section, track your progress per area, and identify weak spots before exam day. Whether you are preparing for your EMT or Paramedic certification, the flashcard system adapts to your learning pace and helps you build comprehensive coverage across patient assessment, airway management, pharmacology, cardiology, trauma, and EMS operations.

What are the signs and symptoms of a tension pneumothorax?

Back

Signs and symptoms of a tension pneumothorax include severe respiratory distress, absent breath sounds on the affected side, tracheal deviation toward the unaffected side, jugular vein distention (JVD), hypotension, tachycardia, and cyanosis. The condition results from air trapped in the pleural space with no means of escape, progressively compressing the affected lung and shifting the mediastinum. Needle decompression on the affected side is the emergency intervention performed by paramedics in the field.

What is the recommended treatment algorithm for a patient presenting with pulseless ventricular tachycardia?

Back

For pulseless ventricular tachycardia (pVT), follow the cardiac arrest algorithm: (1) Begin high-quality CPR immediately, (2) Defibrillate with the first available shock at the maximum device setting, (3) Resume CPR for 2 minutes, (4) Administer epinephrine 1 mg IV/IO every 3 to 5 minutes, (5) Consider amiodarone 300 mg IV/IO for the first dose and 150 mg for the second dose, (6) Continue cycles of CPR, rhythm checks, and defibrillation. Identify and treat reversible causes (Hs and Ts) throughout resuscitation.

How the SM-2 spaced repetition algorithm works

The SM-2 algorithm was developed by Piotr Wozniak in 1987 and has been proven effective across millions of learners worldwide. It calculates the optimal review interval for each flashcard based on how well you know the material. Here is how it works inside Arteura:

When you see a flashcard, you attempt to recall the answer before flipping to the back. Then you mark it as Known or Review Later. Known cards receive an increasing review interval - first 1 day, then 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, and so on - with each successful recall pushing the next review further into the future. Review Later cards reset to a shorter interval so you see them again soon. This creates a personalized study schedule that adapts to your actual knowledge, not a one-size-fits-all study plan.

Your progress is tracked per certification level, so you can see at a glance which NREMT sections you have mastered and which need more attention. The dashboard shows your Known percentage, Review Later count, and overall readiness score for each of the 2 certification levels. This data-driven approach ensures you walk into exam day knowing you have covered every topic, not just the ones that felt comfortable.

Frequently asked questions

Are the NREMT flashcards free?

Yes. Each section includes 20 free flashcards you can access with a free account, giving you 40 flashcards at no cost. The Free tier lets you study core EMS concepts, mark cards as Known or Review Later, and track your progress across both certification levels.

How does the spaced repetition system work?

Arteura uses the SM-2 (SuperMemo 2) algorithm to schedule flashcard reviews. When you mark a card as Known, the interval before it reappears increases from 1 day to 3 days, then 7, 14, 30, and beyond. Cards marked Review Later reappear sooner. This scientifically proven method moves knowledge into long-term memory more efficiently than random review.

Do these flashcards cover the current NREMT cognitive exam?

Yes. All flashcards are aligned to the current NREMT cognitive exam blueprint and cover the full scope of both EMT and Paramedic certification levels. The cards address patient assessment, airway management, pharmacology, cardiology, trauma, medical emergencies, and EMS operations at the depth expected on the actual NREMT exam.

How many flashcards should I study to prepare for the NREMT exam?

Most successful candidates review 400 to 600 flashcards for their certification level during their study period. Arteura offers 1,000+ flashcards so you can go deeper on weak areas. Focus on mastering the topics where you score lowest on practice exams, and use the Known/Review Later system to concentrate your time on cards you have not yet memorized.

What is the difference between Free, Full Access, and Lifetime plans?

The Free plan ($0) gives you 20 flashcards per section (40 total), 1 mini exam per section, and basic progress tracking. Full Access ($29.99/month) unlocks all 1,000+ flashcards, all mini exams, full-length simulations, and advanced analytics. The Annual plan ($149.99/year) offers Full Access at a discount. The Lifetime plan ($249.99 one-time) includes everything with permanent access and no recurring charges.
