Vehicle Extrication and EMS Scene Roles

Coordinate with fire rescue during extrication and protect your patient from hazards.

March 9, 2025

Working With Rescue

Fire rescue controls the vehicle and hazards while EMS focuses on patient care. Communicate your needs and listen for warnings. Make early contact with the patient and perform a rapid assessment.

Patient Protection

Use blankets, backboards, or shields to protect patients from glass and tools. Provide hearing and eye protection when cutting begins. Keep the patient informed about what is happening.

Hazards

Be aware of unspent airbags, hybrid vehicle high voltage systems, and unstable vehicles. Fuel spills and fire risk require a charged hose line on scene. Wear appropriate PPE including helmet and gloves.
