Seizure Management for EMTs

Protect the patient, manage the airway, and recognize status epilepticus and its treatment.

October 8, 2024

During the Seizure

Protect the patient from injury by moving objects away and padding the head. Do not restrain the patient or place anything in the mouth. Note the duration and type of movements, since this helps the receiving team.

After the Seizure

The postictal phase involves confusion, drowsiness, and sometimes agitation. Position the patient on their side, suction as needed, and give oxygen. Check blood glucose and look for trauma, fever, and signs of overdose.

Status Epilepticus

A seizure lasting more than 5 minutes, or repeated seizures without recovery, is a medical emergency. Paramedics typically give benzodiazepines such as midazolam or diazepam. Support ventilation, since respiratory depression is likely after treatment.
