The National Model
The National EMS Scope of Practice Model defines four levels: Emergency Medical Responder, EMT, Advanced EMT, and Paramedic. Each builds on the previous level. States license providers and may add or remove specific skills.
Typical Skills by Level
EMRs provide basic first aid and lifesaving interventions until higher-level help arrives. EMTs perform oxygen therapy, AED use, bleeding control, and give certain medications like oral glucose, aspirin, and epinephrine auto-injectors. AEMTs add IV access, limited medication administration, and supraglottic airways.
Paramedic Level
Paramedics perform advanced assessment, ECG interpretation, advanced airway management, and a wide range of medications. They also perform manual defibrillation, cardioversion, and pacing. Always practice within your state scope, local protocols, and medical direction.
