Scene Size-Up and Standard Precautions

The first step on every call: evaluate safety, mechanism, number of patients, and needed resources.

January 5, 2025

Components of Size-Up

Size-up includes standard precautions, scene safety, mechanism of injury or nature of illness, number of patients, and need for additional resources. It begins with dispatch information and continues as you arrive. Never enter an unsafe scene.

Standard Precautions

Wear gloves for every patient contact and add eye protection, masks, and gowns depending on risk. Wash hands or use sanitizer after each call. Treat all body fluids as potentially infectious.

Re-evaluate Constantly

Conditions change, so keep scanning for hazards such as hostile bystanders, traffic, and unstable structures. Request law enforcement, fire, or additional EMS early. Making the call early is better than needing help and waiting.
