Patient Lifting and Moving: Body Mechanics

Protect your back with proper lifting technique, equipment selection, and teamwork.

December 15, 2024

Principles of Safe Lifting

Keep the back straight, bend at the knees, and keep the load close to your body. Lift with your legs and avoid twisting. Communicate with your team before every lift and lift on a clear count.

Equipment

Use stair chairs, scoop stretchers, and powered cots to reduce strain. Know the weight limits of each device and ask for help early. Bariatric patients may require special equipment and extra personnel.

Long-Term Health

Back injuries are among the most common reasons for career-ending injuries in EMS. Build core strength and maintain overall fitness. Report injuries early and use proper technique even on routine calls.
