Safety First
Scene size-up begins before you arrive. Consider dispatch information, and on arrival evaluate hazards such as traffic, violence, fire, hazardous materials, unstable structures, and electrical dangers. Standard precautions and appropriate PPE are required.
Determining Mechanism and Number of Patients
Identify the mechanism of injury or nature of illness, and count the number of patients. If resources are not adequate, call for additional units early. Use the scene to gather clues such as medication bottles, vehicle damage, or odors.
When It Is Not Safe
If the scene is unsafe and you cannot make it safe, stay away and request help from law enforcement or specialized teams. The exam consistently rewards the answer that protects the provider first, because an injured rescuer cannot help anyone.
