What to Look For
DCAP-BTLS stands for deformities, contusions, abrasions, punctures or penetrations, burns, tenderness, lacerations, and swelling. Apply it to the head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, extremities, and back.
Key Exam Points
Check the neck for jugular distention and tracheal deviation, the chest for paradoxical movement and breath sounds, the abdomen for rigidity, and the pelvis gently for instability. Do not rock the pelvis repeatedly. Check pulse, motor, and sensation in all four extremities.
Timing and Priorities
Perform the rapid assessment on significant mechanism patients and those with altered mental status. Do not let it delay transport in critical patients; complete it en route. Reassess any abnormal finding and document it.
