Pass, Fail, and the 95 Percent Confidence Rule

How the computer decides when to end your exam.

December 14, 2024

The Passing Standard

The NREMT sets a passing standard of ability based on the competence required for entry-level practice. The test compares your estimated ability with this standard after each question.

Confidence Intervals

The exam ends when the computer is 95 percent confident that your ability is above or below the standard. If it cannot decide, the test continues until the maximum number of questions or time limit is reached.

No Use in Guessing

Because you cannot know your exact score during the exam, trying to guess your result wastes energy. A short test does not guarantee a pass, and a maximum-length test does not guarantee a fail. Give every question your best effort.
