Why Mnemonics Work
Mnemonics convert a list of unrelated items into a pattern that is easy to retrieve. They work best when you create or personalize them, because the process of building them forms stronger memory links.
Examples to Know
SAMPLE and OPQRST for history, AVPU for mental status, DCAP-BTLS for trauma findings, and APGAR for newborn assessment. For shock signs, use patterns such as pale, cool, and clammy for compensatory shock.
Creating Your Own
Write the first letters of the items, then build a silly sentence or picture. Humor and vivid imagery help recall. Always test yourself, because knowing the mnemonic is not enough unless you can also explain each item.
