How the NREMT Computer Adaptive Test Works

Understand how CAT selects questions and determines pass or fail.

Adaptive Questions

The NREMT uses computer adaptive testing, which adjusts question difficulty based on your answers. A correct answer leads to a slightly harder question, and an incorrect answer leads to an easier one. The goal is to find your ability level efficiently.

Number of Questions

The EMT exam ranges from a minimum to a maximum number of questions, and the test ends when the computer is 95 percent confident that you are above or below the passing standard. A short exam is not necessarily a bad sign, and a long exam is not necessarily a failure.

What This Means for You

You cannot skip questions or go back to change answers. Focus on each question as it comes, and do not try to guess your performance. Consistent knowledge across all content areas is the best strategy.
