NIMS Components and Why They Matter

Review the five components of the National Incident Management System and how they apply to EMS.

September 21, 2024

What NIMS Is

NIMS provides a consistent nationwide template that lets agencies work together during incidents. It applies to all hazards and all levels of government. EMS providers are expected to know its basic concepts.

The Components

NIMS includes preparedness, communications and information management, resource management, command and management, and ongoing management and maintenance. Command and management includes ICS, multiagency coordination systems, and public information. Resource management focuses on typing and inventory of assets.

Applying It

Check in at the staging area, accept your assigned role, and report to your supervisor. Communicate in plain language rather than ten-codes. Track your resources and personnel so accountability is maintained.
