Setting Yourself Up for Success the Night Before
The night before your NREMT exam is not the time to learn new material. Your brain needs time to consolidate what you have already studied, and cramming will only increase your anxiety. Instead, focus on activities that build confidence, reduce stress, and ensure you are physically and mentally ready for the next day.
Light Review, Not Cramming
Spend no more than 30 to 45 minutes reviewing high-yield topics you have already mastered. Flip through your flashcards on airway management, cardiac arrest algorithms, or trauma assessment sequences. The goal is reinforcement, not learning something new. If you encounter a topic you do not understand, write it down and move on. One unfamiliar concept will not determine your exam outcome.
Focus your brief review on the content areas weighted most heavily on the exam: Cardiology and Resuscitation (20%), Medical/OB/Pediatrics (27%), and EMS Operations (21%). These three areas account for nearly 70% of the exam.
Prepare Everything You Need
- Lay out your ID and ATT confirmation
- Choose comfortable clothing (layers are ideal since testing rooms vary in temperature)
- Set two alarms to ensure you wake up on time
- Plan your breakfast and have the ingredients ready
- Check your route to the testing center and account for traffic
- Charge your phone in case you need GPS navigation
Prioritize Sleep
Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Avoid caffeine after noon, limit screen time an hour before bed, and keep your room cool and dark. If your mind is racing, try a progressive muscle relaxation exercise: tense each muscle group for five seconds, then release. Start at your toes and work up to your head. This technique activates your parasympathetic nervous system and helps you fall asleep faster.
If you cannot sleep, do not panic. Lying in a dark room with your eyes closed still provides rest. One night of less-than-perfect sleep will not ruin your performance if you have prepared well over the preceding weeks.
